Five reasons why working from home might not be as much fun as it sounds

drink_at_home_dtsfSoooo many people want to work from home. Whether you’re in a job that isn’t working for you and want to do your own thing or you’re at home with kids and want to earn more money, working from home is something many people aspire to. In fact, the phrase ‘work from home’ gets 22,200 searches on Google every month in the UK alone.

And you can see why. The thought of working whenever you want, day or night and in your pajamas is pretty appealing. As is being able to work around your kids and reduce what you pay on childcare. It can be done (I’m doing it! ) but it isn’t as easy as it sounds. Here are five reasons why working at home isn’t quite as much fun as you may think:

Why laptops are still the best choice for business mums

Tablet computers may have become very popular over the last few years, but for the lives we lead as home-based business owners I don’t think you can beat laptops.

Most business mums don’t have the luxury of their own office space. We usually work from the dining room table or actually anywhere else that there’s space! A laptop can easily be packed away and brought out again whenever you need it.  Mums often find themselves needing to work where they can keep their kids in view just to be sure they’re not getting up to mischief. A laptop is portable enough to move around with you but powerful enough to use as a business machine.

But it’s not just about work. Usually, mum’s computer is also used for homework, games, or creative projects like editing family videos. Not to mention social media for both mums and teenagers. These days, laptops need to be flexible, powerful and compact all at the same time.

We’ve had a Sony Vaio laptop for a few years now and it’s fitted the bill perfectly. In fact Sony VAIO is a range of laptops, some geared more towards entertainment and others for professional use.  Each boasts a beautiful contemporary design, with an eclectic range of features to meet your requirements and suit your budgetary needs. The VAIO range provides you with the most innovative technology, most featuring LED technology to ensure a greater battery life, and a greater viewing experience through slimmer and lighter screens.

And if you don’t want to be without a tablet after all the VAIO Tap 11 provides the user with the best of both worlds of a PC and a tablet. This latest model boasts itself as the world’s thinnest Windows 8 tablet PC, combining all the great elements of a high performance PC with the thin and light weighting of a tablet. Presenting a magnetic cover with a wireless full pitch keyboard and touchpad included, the design of this product also serves its multi-functional purpose. Whether you are on the move, using the tablet as a notepad to scribble down some notes, or want to connect this to your TV at home, the VAIO Tap 11 will be sure to fulfil your needs.

To see what you (and your children!) can do with a Vaio laptop, just take a look at the infographic below:

How to enjoy your business planning for 2014 (yes, even though it’s December!)

At this time of year I don’t feel very inspired. And I certainly don’t feel like doing any business planning!

With so much to do on the run up to Christmas, everyone having coughs and colds  plus the long nights and dark days, I really just hang on in there until Christmas is over. Here’s the view from the top of our hill this morning…

It’s no wonder I’m feeling sluggish, is it?  🙂

So usually I just leave my planning until the first few days of January.  This year I decided to be better organised though. I started the Christmas preparations in early November so I’ve had a more relaxed December, meaning that I’m in a better frame of mind to plan out the coming year.

To help me with my business planning I’ve grabbed a copy of Karen Gunton’s  BizPlanTastic planner…

Yes, I do look half-asleep in that photo! Continue reading “How to enjoy your business planning for 2014 (yes, even though it’s December!)”

How to use infographics to promote your business

infographicsVisual content is on the up, especially infographics.

Infographics are visual representations of information and they have become really popular in the last couple of years. Here are some reasons why they could be good for your business:

Infographics help drive traffic and boost awareness

An engaging and informative infographic is easily pinned on Pinterest, shared on Facebook and republished on other blogs. It’s a great way to broaden awareness for your business and to drive traffic to your site.

It’s easy to get the facts across with an infographic

Take the information you might put into a 1000 word article and display it as an infographic instead. It could be easier and faster to understand that way, plus web content needs to be quick to read as attention spans are so short online.

Five infographic tips: Continue reading “How to use infographics to promote your business”
