Is this your first blogging conference?

I went to Cybermummy ’11

Are you attending both days?

I’m speaking on Friday and hope to get there on Saturday too.

What are you most looking forward to at BritMums Live 2013?

Speaking at such a huge and high profile event. I’ve been a trainer for a long time but this will be my biggest event ever.

What are you wearing?

So far I have no idea! That’s what I’m working on next.

What do you hope to gain from BritMums Live 2013?

There are so many great workshops and presentations, I just want to be there to take it all in. And to meet those people that I feel I already know but have never seen face-to-face.

Tell us one thing about you that not everyone knows

I’ve been blogging here for nearly 4 years, so it feels like there’s not a lot left that people don’t know! Erm…well I’m a bit of a closet geek. I read New Scientist for fun. But don’t tell anyone, that will you? 🙂

See you there!

(Note: This post is over a month old but I’ve pinned it to the front of my blog so anyone passing by who will be at BritMums live this weekend (21&22 June) knows a bit about me 🙂 )

Review: Sales, Pricing and Marketing Skills course

Today we have guest poster Joan Walllington of Little Hands Music reviewing the Sales, Pricing and Marketing Skills course from High Speed Training:

I agreed to review a course for High Speed Training today and decided to pick the Sales, Pricing and Marketing Skills course. High Speed Training offer lots of different courses and a fantastic way of getting qualifications quickly if you are wishing to update your existing skills or add new skills to your business, and their website is very clear and easy to follow, just hard to decide which course as there are so many to choose!

Once I decided which course to do, it was very easy to log on, and I was able to start the course straight away and at a time convenient to me, and able to stop and restart whenever I wished to.

The course content are a selection of slide show of text and images and some thought provoking questions, and a great course to do if you are new to business. Having being in business for quite a few years now, I found it thought provoking and more recapping on things I was aware of and perhaps could put more into practice.

The only flaw I found was that I wanted to read it at my own pace instead of listening to someone else read the content to me, but the good part is that I could pause it whenever I wished, so if there was an interruption, I could deal with that, and then carry on the learning.

I personally wanted a quick course and update my skills, and was very impressed at the speed I could progress and that I could obtain a certificate and equally put into practice the tips and ideas from the course, and so increase sales as well as skills.

I would recommend High Speed Training, as it is as it says, High Speed, and I will definitely carry on doing other courses with them.

Do I need business insurance?

Insurance. It’s definitely not the most exciting part of starting a business but you really do need it. There are a range of different types of insurance that you might need, even as a one-person home-based business and I’m going to cover the basics here:

Liability Insurance

If you injure someone or damage their property and you are found to be at fault, you may need to pay damages. Liability insurance protects your business against these costs. Liability insurance isn’t just for big companies who have to cover themselves against employees falling off ladders. If you’re a cleaner you could stain a client’s carpet, for example. Even an IT consultant could find a client tripping over their laptop case!

General liability insurance can cover a range of different things like employees, customers and damage to property and tools.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

Professional indemnity insurance covers you if you need to pay to correct a mistake or cover any legal costs because of negligence e.g. giving incorrect advice or making a mistake in your work. You’ll need this if you offer advice or handle clients’ data or intellectual property.

Home insurance

The home insurance you already have may cover your business at no extra cost, especially if your business is basically just a laptop. But it’s important that you give your insurance company a call to tell them that you’re running a business from home. Otherwise they may refuse to pay if you make a claim.

Check the terms and conditions of your mortgage too, as your mortgage provider may also need to know about your home-based business.

Motor insurance

If you’re using your car for your business, don’t forget to tell your motor insurance company. As for house insurance, not informing the insurer may make the policy invalid if you need to make a claim.

Adding business cover to your policy doesn’t usually cost much and it may even be free.

Other types of insurance

Depending on your business, you may need more specialist insurance too. For example, if you have expensive stock in transit, you’ll probably want to insure that. And business interruption insurance can cover you if your business has to stop trading due to e.g. broken equipment or fire damage. Or perhaps even unoccupied insurance.

For more information on the type of insurance that your business needs, it’s best to talk to an insurance broker.

I started a business with a family: Rhys Davies of Your Jigsaw Puzzles

Tell us a little about your business…

YourJigsawPuzzles is an online retailer of… you guessed it… jigsaw puzzles. We started the business in early 2012 with no outside funding or bank loans. We are a purely family-run business.

What was your job before starting your business?

I’ve actually been self-employed and run multiple businesses since I was 14.

I left school at a very young age knowing that for me personally, I was never going to need to learn history, foreign languages etc. I was born to be in business. I grew up around hard-working family members who had their own businesses so a work ethic has been instilled in me from day one.

The websites I’ve run vary from simple automated content sites all the way up working with movie companies to promote their viral movie trailers. Ecommerce is where I’ve settled and I love this new chapter in my business. Continue reading “I started a business with a family: Rhys Davies of Your Jigsaw Puzzles”

Take your library on the move with a Kindle

Today’s guest post comes from journalist, copywriter and author Emily Buckley. Over to you, Emily!

First launched in 1997, the Amazon Kindle has revolutionised the way we read. Paying for extra baggage at the airport because you’ve brought ten bestsellers on holiday with you is a thing of the past, as is shoulder ache from lugging a trusty book around with you in your bag all day. With a Kindle, you’ll never run out of books as you can purchase a new one with the push of a button, wherever you are. The great news is that entry level Kindles have come down in price considerably over the years, meaning that everyone should have the opportunity to own their very own portable library.

E-books have fast become the reading device of choice for millions across the globe, evidenced by the fact that in the latter three months of 2010, Amazon sold more e-books than paperback books in the USA for the first time. So why should you buy a Kindle? Although it may seem relatively expensive, it’s the cheapest it’s been since its launch and, as the majority of ebooks are cheaper than their paperback counterparts, you’ll end up saving money in the long run.

Admittedly, the Kindle isn’t the only e-reader on the market and if you’ve made the decision to invest in one you’ll have to know choose what sort of reader you want. Essentially it comes down to a choice between a black-and-white e-reader such as the Kindle and a full-colour tablet such as the iPad. When it comes to reading, the Kindle wins hands down. It’s markedly cheaper than all tablets, lightweight (imagine holding aloft an iPad for a long reading session) and comes the closest to replicating the experience of reading a book. The Kindle’s e-ink screen looks surprisingly like printed paper and allows users to read in direct sunlight, something that isn’t possible with the LCD screens utilised by tablets. This makes them great for taking on holiday, or reading in the park in your lunch hour.

The downsides? Unlike tablets, you’re unable to browse the web on a Kindle. However, for those who simply want to read that also means you’re not interrupted by incoming emails, Facebook messages and Tweets, so could be a blessing in disguise. The Kindle’s screen isn’t backlit, which means that additional lighting is necessary in poor lighting conditions, but there is a reason for this. Backlit screens can cause eye strain and tiredness over long periods and as Kindles are designed for book lovers who are likely to lose themselves in books, this obviously isn’t ideal and is the main source of frustration for tablet users when they read. Furthermore, covers with built-in lights and attachable lamps are both available to solve the lighting issue.

A Kindle makes reading on the go so much easier, giving you the ability to download e-books as and when you want to, carry around thousands of books in a tiny piece of equipment, and even hire library books. It is a book lover’s dream.

Journalist, copywriter and author Emily Buckley is both an avid reader and writer of books who would be lost without her Kindle!
