I had a very interesting conversation with a business mum last week. She was telling me about a recent marketing campaign that hadn’t gone as well as she had expected.
She had been using a combination of Facebook ads and local leafleting to encourage people to come to an event she was running.
I asked if she had used Facebook ads before.
She hadn’t.
I said that I had details of a free webinar on successful Facebook advertising and her response amazed me:
“Oh I don’t have time for training courses – I’ve got a business to run”
Now, I get it, I really do.
We are all busy, we all have families to feed, homes to look after and businesses to run.
But if we want to make those businesses successful, we need to have the right skills.
How could this lady expect to run a successful Facebook ads campaign if she had no knowledge, no experience and no training?
Let me ask you, when you give a child their first bike do you expect them to get on it and start pedaling straight away?
No, of course you don’t.
First of all they have to get used to the feeling of balancing on a bike, get their co-ordination right to be able to pedal and practice their steering so that they head in the right direction.
It takes many, many hours of gentle coaxing, encouraging comments and often a little trickery to get your little one riding a bike on their own.
So, why, oh why oh why do some people expect to become business women extraordinaire without investing in some training and personal development.
Developing your business skills is an investment. It’s an investment that your business desperately needs. And I would even argue that without making this investment your business is not going to be the shining star that it deserves to be.
You can’t expect your child to start riding their bike by themselves on Christmas morning without any help from you.
And equally, the business mum that I was talking to can’t possibly know how to run a successful Facebook ad campaign when she has no experience and no training.
When you are growing a business from scratch, you’ve got two choices.
You can either invest your time or your money.
Lots of mums in business are on a limited budget and they prefer to invest their time scouring the internet, signing up for free webinars and free training courses so that they can develop the skills that they need.
And this is a very sensible way to build your business skills but you need to accept that it’s going to take you a long time.
First of all you’ve got to locate the right information……then you’ve got to work out if it credible and relevant to your business……then you’ve got to work your way through a one hour webinar to get the 10 minute section that’s relevant for you….. then the baby wakes up from his nap, that’s the end of your work time and another day has passed when you haven’t moved your business forward a single inch.
Does that scenario sound familiar?
The alternative is that you can invest your money to get the business skills that you need.
