My last Business Mums Blog Carnival

After more than three years, I’ve decided to hand over the Business Mums Blog Carnival coordinator’s role. I’ll be handing over officially at the end of July. We’re planning to change coordinators every year from now on, to give more people a chance to benefit from the networking opportunity of organising the carnival.

The new coordinator for 2013/14 is  Debbie O’Connor of Motivating Mum and Mums The Boss and she officially takes over on 1st August. Debbie will be managing the schedule for the next year, so if you’d like to be a host then please do get in touch with her.

That leaves me with just one carnival…the one for this month:

The host for the July blog carnival is thefarnhamhub.com/blog/.

Please email your link info (at) ilove2blog4you.com by 25th July and the carnival will be published on 26th July.

The theme is ‘Juggling school holidays and a business’

So thanks for supporting the carnival over the last few years and please do carry on joining in!

Starting a little online shop? You can still learn from the big guys

Starting an online shop is a popular choice for aspiring business mums. Most of us start small, with a tiny budget and we bootstrap our way as best we can, but it pays to be inspired by the big guys every now and then.

Let me give you an example: Zalando is an online clothing store that started in 2008. You might notice that at Zalando, things operate on a slightly bigger scale that most mum-run businesses (revenues for 2011 were $262 million, according to Techcrunch) 🙂

Although it’s now a multinational e-commerce business, Zalando started out with one product range  (shoes) in just one country (Germany) and now sells fashion and lifestyle items in fourteen European countries including the UK. When we start our online shops, it’s tempting to sell a broad range of products to attract as many customers as we can. But if a big business with start-up funding chose to start with just shoes, that’s good evidence that going narrow is better than going broad. There’s plenty of time to add new ranges later on if you need to.

Something else you might notice from Zalando’s progress is that they didn’t have an original business idea. Online shoe stores were around way before 2008. Too many people get hung up on having a radically new and unique business idea when you just need to be better or different than what has gone before. In Zalando’s case they focused on customer loyalty which leads to repeat sales and word of mouth marketing.

Customer service, loyalty and word of mouth are all things that you can do well as a very small business, too.

So even though I focus on starting little online stores here at Business Plus Baby, I recommend you think bigger every now and then.

Our first family movie night

We’ve just reached a special time in our children’s lives. At ages five and almost four, we are well past the nappies, potty training and weaning stages. We don’t need buggies or a huge changing bag when we go out and it’s wonderful!

(I realise that if you’re still knee deep in carrot puree and nappies, you probably hate me for saying that. But hang on in there, it will all be worth it in the end. I promise. 🙂 )

Even better, the children are old enough to sit still and concentrate for just a little while now, which is why we decided to have our first ever family movie night this weekend.

Our five-year old made tickets for each of the family members:

We ordered a delivery from Pizza Hut, which was fantastic for me because I DIDN’T HAVE TO COOK!!!! I bought ice cream and popcorn…

The film of choice was Finding Nemo. We picked it because both kids are currently fans of Octonauts and Julia Donaldson’s book Tiddler The Story Telling Fish, so we stuck with the fishy theme. And as it was released well before our kids arrived, me and Mr L hadn’t seen it before, so it would be a film premiere for all of us. If you’ve got young kids you’ll know that you have to watch each film about a thousand times, so we bought Finding Nemo on Blu-Ray for the occasion.

So we had our pizza and ice cream and took our seats on the sofa to watch the film.

Young kids can’t sit still for a whole film, so we had to have some popcorn in the interval…

We haven’t had a Blu-Ray player for long and I was really impressed at how fantastic the film looked in this format. Like the best kiddie films it had funny moments specially for the adults and both parents really enjoyed it.

Best of all we had some proper family time with the whole family together and me snuggled up with my little ones on the sofa. Lovely!

My tip for a good night in is to make a special occasion of it and take the opportunity to spend some quality time together. We’re all so busy now that sometimes it’s worth booking a night in the diary and doing something together.

This post is an entry into MoneySupermarket’s Big Night In competition. Moneysupermarket reckon staying in is the new going out because “everything from handbags to gladrags via cocktails, tips and taxis seems to be getting more expensive – meaning a night out on the town can blow a big hole in your bank balance.” Even though nights on the town are few and far between for us these days, going out with the family is not cheap either! (MoneySupermarket contributed £50 to our Big Night In.)
