I Started A Business With A Baby: Helen Gourley of Miglio Designer Jewellery

Tell us a little about your business

I am an independent consultant for Miglio Designer Jewellery in Central Scotland where I sell designer jewellery and manage a team of almost 40 women up and down the UK.  I sell the jewellery through parties, one-to-ones, events and through my website.

What was your job before starting your business?

I have been involved in a variety of industries since leaving university but my most recent position was as a banking advisor for a high street bank where I sold bank accounts, loans and credit cards to customers.

How did you go from your old career to your new business and what were your reasons for starting your own business?

When I left my banking position to have my daughter (my second child) I was sure that I wanted to return and further my career in the industry.  However, having had her I found I didn’t want to go back to the 9 to 5 grind, running around for school and nursery pick-ups, panicking and scrabbling for childcare during the holiday season and constantly rushing from home to work.  Even though the bank offered me reduced hours I just felt that I would be better off working for myself so I investigated the Direct Selling industry starting with the website of the Direct Selling Association. I Started a Business with a Baby: Liz Weston of New Baby Guides, Weston Communications and Young Families

Liz Weston is Founder of The New Baby Guides, Weston Communications and CoFounder of the Young Families Baby and Toddler Shows.

I’m a mum of two boys, aged 3.5 and 2 years old. I created the New Baby Guides in January 2009 and since then, they’ve grown exponentially and have been the springboard to other great things for me and our family. The New Baby Guides are NHS Maternity Unit publications which we produce for local NHS Maternity Units at no cost to themselves. We fund the Guides by selling relevant and appropriate advertising from businesses with a local presence in them. We also give some of the profits to each Unit we work with. The Guides started in 2009 and are now getting to over 100,000 new mums and families each year. They have a glossy card cover and good paper inside, so they are something that women and their families hold on to and use regularly as a source of information and help. Nicki Cawood’s Transition from Career Woman to Business Mum (Part 2)

Today, Nicki continues her story. Here’s the link to part 1 of Nicki Cawood’s transition from career woman to business mum.

Running a home-based business under a company umbrella has it’s pros and cons. You start up for very title outlay, have resources, training etc on hand but similarly, to really excel you need to push the boundaries to rise about the group or you are “Another Usborner…”.
