How to use infographics to promote your business

infographicsVisual content is on the up, especially infographics.

Infographics are visual representations of information and they have become really popular in the last couple of years. Here are some reasons why they could be good for your business:

Infographics help drive traffic and boost awareness

An engaging and informative infographic is easily pinned on Pinterest, shared on Facebook and republished on other blogs. It’s a great way to broaden awareness for your business and to drive traffic to your site.

It’s easy to get the facts across with an infographic

Take the information you might put into a 1000 word article and display it as an infographic instead. It could be easier and faster to understand that way, plus web content needs to be quick to read as attention spans are so short online.

Five infographic tips:

Infographics might have plenty of benefits, but they’re not necessarily easy to use in your content.  Here are a few tips to help you get started:

1. Find concepts that you want to visualise

Start with the data. What relevant data might your audience benefit from knowing? For example, if you’re an editor you might publish a graphic that shows the most common spelling and grammar errors.

2. Create content that people want to see

The key to any type of content, written or visual, is to provide value. Simply publishing data isn’t enough.

Going back to our example editor, if she published an infographic that showed how many people use an editor that wouldn’t provide any value to her blog’s readers. On the other hand, a graphic that gives the most common spelling errors in self-published books – and the statistics about how often they occur – would be useful and might persuade her readers to hire her.

3. Keep it simple

Many people get carried away with the design elements of the infographic and lose the message.  Stick to a few colours and remember that white space and readability are essential.

If graphic design isn’t your strength, you can use Powerpoint, online tools like Piktochart or Infogr.am or pay someone to create one for you on Fiverr.

4. Publishing

Once you have created your infographic you can use it as a graphic for blog posts, share them on social media and make sure they are easy for other people to share and pin, too.

5. Use other people’s infographics

Finally, you don’t have to always create your own infographics. You can use other people’s infographics too. Find graphics that are relevant to your audience, use the embed code the creator has provided and then add your own touches. Write about the graphic and share relevant information after the graphic to tie it all together.
