Should you sell from eBay, Amazon or your own website?

Following on from the post setting up an online shop: the pros and cons of different types, here is a guest post from Naziana Searle, owner of  www.bambinoboo.co.uk and writer of a start-up business blog smallbusinessmum.wordpress.com. Naziana shares her experience of starting her own online shop, eBay shop and selling on Amazon.

I decided that I wanted to set up my own business around 6 years ago. I set up Bambino Boo, a children’s online boutique selling girls and boys boutique clothing at discounted prices in July 2010, so I have been trading for less than a year, and so far it is going well and I am really enjoying it.

I wanted my own website so that I could start building my brand. I found that it takes a while to be ranked highly on Google. So as my ranking on Google gets better with time and SEO work I have decided to use various sales channels.

Amazon is a great sales channel. There are some good reasons to sell on Amazon – (a)  people have immediate access to the items you are selling and (b) a new company seems more trustworthy if they sell on Amazon. The only negative is that Amazon take a large commission on the sales price.

I wanted to increase the number of sales to start meeting the sales targets I had imposed upon myself. Although I had sold a few bits and bobs on eBay, after about 6 months of trading I decided to open an eBay shop.

I calculated how many items I would need to sell for it to be worthwhile having an eBay shop. Having an Ebay shop as with Amazon gives people immediate access to the goods I sell.  However, the items generally sell for less than they would on the website or Amazon.

I think that the way to early success is to have multiple sales channels, as it can take a while before you can rely on just the website to bring a large amount of traffic in.
